Wensleydale sheep were created in 1838 by crossing a Dishley Leicester ram with a Teeswater ewe. This is a rare breed and possess a unique quality known as 'central checking' that prevents the formation of kemp in the fleece. Wensleydale wool is the finest and most valuable luster longwool in the world. It is a luxurious, squishy yarn that halos and is used for its special effects and handle in hand knitting yarn, knitwear and cloth. It is regularly blended with mohair because of its similar qualities.
